Open Philanthropy

What it is: an effective-altruism grantmaking organization financed primarily by Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and his wife Cari Tuna. It enters this vault through two verified threads in the 2026-10-04-youtube-newport-ai-harm-taxonomy paper trail (ai-doom-paper-trail): it funded the Horizon Institute fellowship program that placed AI aides on Capitol Hill (horizon-institute), and it anchors the effective-altruism money web that Sam Bankman-Fried’s giving joined before FTX collapsed.

Record

  • Politico, October 13, 2023, states that Open Philanthropy “is financed primarily by billionaire Facebook co-founder and Asana CEO Dustin Moskovitz and his wife Cari Tuna”. It funded Horizon’s congressional AI fellows, and ethics experts pointed to Open Philanthropy’s “ties to OpenAI and Anthropic” as the conflict. A 2022 Open Phil document described the fellowship as seeking candidates who share its “interests in global catastrophic risks and technology’s long-term impacts”. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/10/13/open-philanthropy-funding-ai-policy-00121362
  • New York Times, December 1, 2022, reports that think tanks working on AI and national security were “largely funded by Open Philanthropy”, an organization the paper describes as “an effective altruist giving organization backed by a Facebook co-founder”. The same piece covers the FTX collapse’s disruption of EA money, including the Future Fund led partly by William MacAskill.
  • Forbes, November 7, 2022, reported that Open Phil warned nonprofits that FTX-affiliated grants made in the 90 days before bankruptcy were likely to be clawed back.
  • New York Post, March 8, 2024, says Open Philanthropy gave $55 million to Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), whose staffers appear in government roles.

The group-house connection

Reporting from the Wall Street Journal (August 2026) places Dario Amodei, his friend Holden Karnofsky, and Amodei’s sister Daniela in a San Francisco group house with other AI-safety and effective-altruism figures; Daniela later married Karnofsky. Karnofsky co-founded GiveWell and leads Open Philanthropy, the second fact from general reference rather than the sources above. This is the substance behind Newport’s unnamed 10:52 line about the group house. See ai-doom-paper-trail.
