Emily M. Bender

Joint first author of bender-2021-stochastic-parrots, affiliated per the byline with the University of Washington, Seattle. Computational linguist. Her earlier single-author-key work supplies the parrots paper’s theoretical spine: “Climbing towards NLU” with Alexander Koller (ACL 2020) carries the form-versus-meaning argument behind stochastic-parrot, and “Data statements for natural language processing” with Batya Friedman (TACL 2018) is one of the documentation frameworks the parrots paper recommends, alongside documentation-debt.

She reused the parrot framing in later talks, including a July 2021 lecture at the Alan Turing Institute.
