Cognitive immunization
Definition here: sole-2026-llm-cognitive-virus’s name for preserving resistance to substitutive or dependency-producing coupling while allowing beneficial human-AI integration. It is not the blocking of contact with LLMs.
Prevention is cheaper than reversal
This is the paper’s central result. If a population is near the uncoupled state, invasion is prevented while the
transmission pressure lambda stays below lambda_TC = rho + kappa. Once the population is on the coupled
attractor, dropping lambda back under that same value does nothing. Recovery needs lambda < lambda_SN = 2*sqrt(kappa*rho), a larger cut than prevention would have required. The gap between the two is the hysteresis of
technological-lock-in.
Six levers
The paper’s Table 1 maps interventions onto the model rates:
- Lower
lambda, the spread of substitutive coupling: prevents invasion belowlambda_TC. After lock-in, recovery needslambdabelowlambda_SN. - Raise
rho, the return to unaided cognition: raises both thresholds and narrows hysteresis. Bistability disappears atrho >= kappa. - Raise
kappa, collective reinforcement of autonomy: raises resistance to invasion, and forkappa > rhoalso widens the hysteretic interval. - Raise
rho/kappa, favoring individual recovery over collective lock-in: moves the system towardrho = kappa, where the transition turns continuous. - Lower
mu, the move into dependency: no effect on the thresholds, and it cuts the dependent share and raises competence. - Raise
sigma, recovery from dependency: no effect on the thresholds, and it cuts dependency and raises competence.
Two levels
The paper separates the levers. lambda, rho, and kappa reshape the tipping landscape and decide whether
bistability is possible at all. mu and sigma set the composition of the coupled population through
D*/(C*+D*) = mu/(mu + sigma), so they change the cognitive burden without moving the tipping points. Immunization
can therefore aim at preventing a collective transition or at keeping ordinary use from hardening into dependency.
Beyond education
The paper notes that once dependency is established, educational design alone is not enough. It points to work on problematic LLM use and the psychological and behavioral mechanisms around loss of control, and names behavioral self-regulation and, in more severe cases, cognitive-behavioral therapy as relevant. The immunization frame then runs from institutional prevention to individual recovery.
